“Sweeping the Top Five! China Leads the World in Zero-Emission Vehicles”
2025-07-06
According to the latest report by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), China holds a leading position in the global Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) market, with particularly outstanding performance in the electric vehicle (EV) sector.
Currently, China’s annual electric vehicle sales have surpassed 11 million units, accounting for more than half of the global EV sales.
This achievement is driven by strong domestic market demand and targeted export policies by Chinese manufacturers, which have together propelled monthly EV sales to exceed 1 million units for the first time this year.
ICCT data shows that Chinese automakers occupy the top five positions in ZEV market coverage, and five out of the top six spots in terms of EV sales share.
Among them, companies such as Geely and SAIC have already achieved a 50% EV sales share, reaching their 2025 target one year ahead of schedule.
Furthermore, in 2024, BYD’s global battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales surpassed Tesla’s for the first time, with a 25% year-over-year increase in BEV sales and a 47% increase in combined BEV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales.
Both BYD and Tesla have been categorized as “Leaders” in the ICCT’s rating system.
Drew Kodjak, President and CEO of the ICCT, stated that as Chinese automakers expand in global markets, other leading international car manufacturers face urgent pressure to accelerate their own transitions, or risk losing their competitive edge.
